Corrupt Congress abandoning Social Security recipients
Neither will millions of other Americans whose veterans’ benefits, disability benefits, and other monthly payments are pegged to Social Security. But Warren argues that CEOs are still enjoying income boosts, and they can chip in to cover heightened payments for Americans reliant on Social Security.
She said without the change, millions who rely on Social Security and critical veterans benefits won’t see any increase for only the third time since 1975.
“For me, the way I kind of think about it, is it’s about choices”, she said in an interview. “We have the money to do this, only right now the money goes to fund a loophole that benefits a handful of corporate CEOs”. “Giving seniors a little help with their Social Security and stitching up corporate tax write-offs isn’t just about economics; it’s about our values”.
Many economists and advocates have called on the government to use a different price index for Social Security benefits that more accurately measures the cost of living for elderly Americans-the Bureau of Labor Statistics actually already tabulates this, called the CPI-E, in a strictly “experimental” mode, but doesn’t apply it. That formula showed a 0.6 percent increase in the cost of living over the past year, and elsewhere, core goods and services are up 2 percent. Republicans control Congress and are unlikely to support the legislation.

“At the very least, we must do everything we can to make sure that every senior citizen and disabled veteran in this country receives a fair cost-of-living adjustment to keep up with the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs and health care”. But this “hold harmless” provision does not apply to about 30 percent of Medicare beneficiaries, a disparate group that includes those enrolled in Medicare but who are not yet receiving Social Security, new Medicare beneficiaries, seniors earning more than $85,000 a year, and indigent beneficiaries who receive both Medicare and Medicaid benefits.
