White House Won’t Rule Out Executive Order to Close Gitmo
Roberts has been fighting the Obama Administration’s efforts to transfer Guantanamo detainees to the USA, particularly to Fort Leavenworth.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, asked about the possibility that President Barack Obama could take unilateral moves to transfer detainees to the United States, said all options remain in play.
Congress will use every tool in its toolbox to block the White House from unilaterally closing the military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Sen. Just eight men were tried and convicted of war crimes, and only three of those are still serving time at Guantanamo. Sources said Clinton criticized White House aides at a meeting in August 2010 for “not working harder” on closing the detention facility, according to a 2013 article in Newsweek.

While the new legislation does not change any of the language relating to Guantanamo, the White House has been circumspect on whether that would be enough to merit another veto, which Congress might be able to override.
Obama advisors had hoped McCain would help them overcome that opposition, and in an interview Wednesday, he didn’t rule it out.
