Desharnais goal lifts Habs over Isles 4-1
Montreal Canadiens Dale Weise, 2nd from right celebrates his first period goal against the New York Islanders with team-mates Alex Galchenyuk, P.K. Subban and David Desharnais during National Hockey League game in Montreal Thursday November 5, 2015.
The skinny: David Desharnais scored at 6:22 of the third period to snap a 1-1 tie as the Canadiens beat the New York Islanders 4-1 Thursday night at the Bell Centre.
Price remains sidelined with a lower body injury and in recent years that development would have been a crushing blow to a Canadiens team that relied nearly entirely on Price to make 35 saves and help them squeeze out 2-1 wins just about every night.
The Islanders’ John Tavares, who returned to the lineup after missing three games with flu-like symptoms, had five shots on goal, but failed to beat Condon. He is coming off a season in which he finished with a career-high in goals (38) and points (86). “We hadn’t given them anything to that point and then that happens”. “I thought we had a good game plan and we played a good hockey team really well”.
Montreal had a 24-18 shot advantage and beat former Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak for only the second time in six meetings.
Gallagher was on the doorstep to deflect a Max Pacioretty shot between Halak’s pads at 7:55. Pacioretty added a second assist when Tomas Plekanec scored an empty-net marker with 2:03 to play.
Montreal killed all three Islander power plays and have yet to allow a short-handed goal at home in 23 chances this season. His return is flawless timing for the Islanders because Thursday’s game will be one of their biggest tests of the young season when they visit a Canadiens team that still has the best record in the league following their nine-game winning streak to open the season.
“It happened to us against Buffalo, too”, Capuano said of a play in the 2-1 loss to the Sabres on Sunday that was similar – a clearing attempt by the Isles hit the linesman and allowed Buffalo to come back the other way during an Islanders’ line change.
