Cowboys Can Win Most Of Their Remaining Games
Even after playing well for most of last weekend’s 13-12 loss to Seattle, the Cowboys let Russell Wilson direct a winning drive to a field goal late in the fourth quarter.
This must have been what it felt like when Knicks center Willis Reed came out to play the Lakers in the 1970 National Basketball Association Finals in Madison Square Garden.
Despite Romo not slated to be back until Week 11 against the Dolphins, the thought of Romo simply throwing uncovered slant patterns to receivers has to be an early Christmas present to Cowboys fans.
For the Miami game, Romo is expected to make his return.
So it’s possible that a loss to the Eagles could mean Dallas is back in Tampa Bay, facing a win-or-else scenario on the same field where Johnson won with Romo sidelined seven years ago. The Cowboys have looked better, or at least found themselves in closer games, but Cassel, just like Weeden, is unable to make big plays happen or generate any sort of sensation on the opposing defense that there’s a reason to be afraid of the deep pass.
This team has asked much of Romo throughout his career, and the list of demands on him this season are absurd. James Hanna was the target of an uncharacteristic halfback pass from McFadden, but the ball went incomplete, and Gavin Escobar wasn’t targeted at all in the game.
Agreed. Without Romo, a record around.
The Cowboys are losing winnable games because the performances by Tony Romo’s replacements have been worse than the worst games Tony Romo has ever played.
Coach Jason Garrett offered up the cliche that it’s not just one guy and that it’s a team thing.
David Helman was at the Cowboys practice today and he tweeted “Romo just uncorked on a 25-30 yard comeback route to Terrance in pass skel”.
“Within our division, you have to realize that there is hope”, said Matt Cassel, who has lost two games filling in for Romo after Brandon Weeden lost the first three starts following the injury.
A look at Cassel and Weeden’s efficiency metrics paint an even more awful picture. Bryant finished the game with two receptions for fifteen yards. Receiver Terrance Williams has been exposed.
Offensive Line: The offensive line played well, as La’el Collins continued to show growth and dominating potential.
“It’s not that we haven’t literally had a similar situation more than one time before and certainly no one has pushed up his expectations any higher than Tony about what he can do for us….” The Seahawks turned up the pass rush, Cassel suddenly couldn’t escape and there was little drama that Dallas might rally.
So, of course the Cowboys have lost five in a row. But as this team has gradually seen a few key players return to the field, it hasn’t helped them come away with a win. “It’s a lot more serious than the football [injury]”.
