Bondi Beach sun-seekers capture ‘cloud tsunami’ closing in
Mid-afternoon, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning, urging residents to stay indoors and away from windows, unplug appliances and avoid using phones.
“I think Sydney just perfected the shelf cloud”, he tweeted.
The shelf cloud went on to dump rain on Sydney.
“People started running down to the cliff edge to take photos…”
“Shelf clouds are pretty common, but to get them so big and and coming right up toe coast of Sydney is not that common, you get a couple a year”, Mr Moir said.
According to ABC News, there has been no reports of damage so far, but at least 44 people sent out calls for help along the coastline.
The low-hanging cloud formation prompted warnings about large hailstones, heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Crowds gathered to watch huge storm clouds – dubbed on social media as a “cloud tsunami” – form near Bondi on Friday.
