Detroit Lions Fire General Manager, Team President
That game at Wembley Stadium turned out to be an embarrassing 45-10 defeat that spun the Lions into their bye week at 1-7.
Now that the Detroit Lions have fired president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew, what’s next for the troubled team?
William, who was the sole owner of Detroit Lions bough the company in 1963 for $4.5 million while after his death at the age of 88 on March 9, 2014, all of the controlling interest of the club was passed to Martha. I asked if he would be interested in a GM or president’s job with any team, and he said, “That’s a hypothetical”.
Both Mayhew and Lewand have had their shares of mistakes over the years. The Lions also can trade Stafford before June 1 with the same cap hit, again taking him off the books completely for all future cap years.
But Lewand and Mayhew were joined at the hip. Although the Lions have a few good talent evaluators – despite the recent draft record – the new personnel boss surely will want to bring in people he knows. Mayhew and Lewand were both fired today.
We fully expect Caldwell to be looking for work after this wretched campaign in Detroit mercifully draws to a close.
He helped build Ford Field, which the Lions moved to in 2002 after years of playing at the Pontiac Silverdome, and was promoted to team president after Matt Millen was sacked early in the 2008 season. Allison Maki has been elevated to chief operating officer. He will report directly to Ford.
These moves were a necessary evil.
When failure happens, you’re just like, “Well, they’re the Detroit Lions and this is what the Detroit Lions do”. Titans interim coach Mike Mularkey said Thursday that Wright has been ruled out for the Saints game.
Ford Jr.is still listed as one of the team’s four vice chairmen, along with his sisters Martha Ford Morse, Sheila Ford Hamp and Elizabeth Ford Kontulis, but he acknowledged recently he no longer has a role with the team.
These are just the latest members of the Lions to be fired, one week after offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi was let go. That was not enough for the fans. “As a teenager, her love of the Lions and knowledge of the game of football would impress many, including, among others, then NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle”, the bio says.
Topping the list of question, aside from the fate of head coach Jim Caldwell is what the team plans to do with quarterback Matthew Stafford. He is now in the midst of one of his worst seasons as a starter.
