Even though scammers might use technology to mask their phone numbers and make them look legitimate, it’s important to know that the IRS will never reach out to you via phone and they’ll never demand payment over the phone.
One Missoula resident says he recently got one of those calls, from a man with a foreign accent calling himself “Peter Williams” telling him he was delinquent on his taxes and must pay up. If you don’t owe taxes, call TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
Numerous calls from that telephone number also have regarded an arrest warrant or a winning lottery number.

Attorney General Jim Hood says these are phone scams and to be cautious when receiving calls like this.
– Never trust callers who use threats and hostility to bully their targets into doing what they want.
“The agency will not ask for your debit card or credit card numbers over the phone and it will not threaten to bring in the police or other agencies to arrest the taxpayer for not paying”.
Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. Hang up immediately. Call (800) 366‐4484 to report the scam.
