Massachusetts is looking good in a survey of America’s fattest states
Childhood obesity is at its most significant percentage in Mississippi and South Carolina, while the number of overweight kids is the greatest in North Dakota and Louisiana.
You can see in the map below, which states have the biggest weight problems (not to be confused with the most obese states in the country.) The darker the blue, the worse the problem is.
The WalletHub reported that New Jersey had the second largest percentage of obese children.
The fattest New England state, it turns out, is Maine, which ranked 24th in the study. Louisiana came a close second, followed by West Virginia.
A separate analysis by CalorieLab, Inc. also found Mississippi to be the fattest state for the tenth consecutive year.
One-third of American adults are obese or overweight, according to a Journal of American Medicine report, and Tennessee plays too large a role in heightening these statistics.
Moreover, that same study showed that for the first time ever, there are more obese people than overweight people in the country.
The data included percentage of adults and children who are overweight, obese, consume drinks with a high sugar content and lead a sedentary lifestyle. South Carolina is near the top for adult health problems, coming in at number four for high cholesterol and third for residents with hypertension.
To obtain the final results, WalletHub calculated the weighted sum of the scores and used the overall result to rank the states.
There was not a single state with an obesity prevalence of less than 20 percent in 2014, according to WalletHub’s findings, with 19 states suffering from a 30- to 35-percent obesity rate.
