Possible changes coming to airport security
“At this time these security enhancements are intended only for certain foreign airports in the region”, Johnson said Friday.
According to CBS News, a security lapse at the Sharm el-Sheikh airport in Egypt may have let a terrorist slip a bomb onto Metrojet’s Airbus A321-200 on Saturday. Authorities suspect that’s how a bomb could’ve made it on board.
Jeh Johnson, secretary of Homeland Security, said Friday the enhancements include additional screening for items put on planes, airport assessments in conjunction with counterparts in countries “in the region” and offers of other assistance that are both seen and unseen.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is expected to announce increased security measures at a few airports in the wake of the Russian airliner that crashed in Egypt over the weekend.
DHS is “working closely” with domestic and global partners to evaluate the cause of the crash, the statement said, and will continue to take appropriate precautionary security measures.
Airport guards regularly skip security checks for friends or co-workers and they often don’t search people “if they look chic or if they come out of a fancy auto”, he said.
US officials would not say whether the decisions by USA airlines to avoid Sharm el Sheik were based on official guidance from any USA government agency.
There was also a recent undercover airport operation where agents went to different airports across the United States and tried to get weapons through TSA checkpoints.
However, when an airport doesn’t have flights to the US, then it’s really beyond the U.S.’s jurisdiction. There are no direct flights from that airport to the United States.
Each bag is run through explosive detection scanners.
“The inspectors have the inside knowledge as to capabilities of the technology, the protocols that are used, the training that the officers, TSA officers use”, Pistole said.
