VW to Compensate a few US auto Owners
Starting next week, VW will launch a new “TDI Goodwill Program” that will put cash in the hands of those owners now driving a TDI diesel model with a defeat device.
Volkswagen has disclosed plans to pay all Carbon dioxide tax differences that European customers will be charged as a result of the difference between the official numbers and the actual emissions in the real world.
The company faces many lawsuits from owners seeking compensation for the decreased resale value of the roughly 500,000 Volkswagen and Audi vehicles that were equipped with illegal software.
Analysts say the software recognized when emissions tests were underway, and then activated emissions controls to deceive testing officials. “There is a program in the works with VW, that I do understand”, said Alan Brown, the head of an association of Volkswagen dealers.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also linked a few larger VW, Porsche and Audi vehicles produced by the automotive giant to illegal software.
This constant negative attention from the diesel scandal is making it hard for Volkswagen to sell new cars, but it’s also potentially going to encourage current owners to purchase from a different brand the next time they buy new cars.
