Henry runs over LSU
When the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committe ranked the 7-1 Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 4 last Tuesday, many were critical of the decision, claiming that Alabama was ranked too high, given their loss to Ole Miss.
Though these teams feature two incredible running backs in LSU’s Leonard Fournette and Alabama’sDerrick Henry, each will be going up against a few of the best defenders against the running game in the NCAA.
A game billed as a clash of the titans turned into an old fashioned beatdown as No. 4 Alabama pounded No. 2 LSU 30-16 on Saturdayin Bryant-Denny Stadium.
The Crimson Tide (8-1, 5-1 Southeastern Conference) physically dismantled the previously unbeaten Tigers (7-1, 4-1) in the second half.
The Tigers now have a five-game losing streak against Alabama, including last year’s heartbreaker that went to overtime. It was Derrick Henry’s day as he carried the ball 28 times for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns, including the go-ahead 14-yard touchdown to put Alabama in front for good.
The oddsmakers are making a statement in this one, making Alabama a touchdown favorite over visiting LSU despite the Tigers holding down the second spot in the college football playoff rankings.
The Tide’s surge began with Adam Griffith’s 55-yard field goal in the final seconds of the first half after LSU had produced a tying 10-point flurry. “I just wanted to finish the drive”, Henry said. Of course LSU knows that, so the Tide is going to need to make the Tigers respect the pass to open things up a little bit for Henry.
“You know Coach Miles is always bringing up the history of LSU and Alabama”, Fournette said. “It couldn’t have happened at a better time against a very good defensive team”.
On a Saturday where there are a number of big games, this one trumps them all. While Coker has actually shown glimpses of athleticism outside the pocket, he has only managed 77 rushing yards, partially due to his inability to consistently get away from a pass rush. He was 6 of 19 for 128 yards with a touchdown and his first interception of the season.
It was a game in which LSU only seemed competitive in spurts.
The Spartans have won 12 straight Big Ten road games, but the Huskers are risky despite so many losses under new coach Mike Riley (last week was their most embarrassing, 55-45 to Purdue). He had a great game today.
