Kansas remains winless as Texas surges past Jayhawks 59-20
Their biggest challenge will be trying to limit the Texas offense; the Jayhawks are last in all of FBS in total defense with over 580 yards per game allowed, and second-to-last with 47.1 points per game allowed.
Coming off a dismal 24-0 loss to Iowa State, the Texas Longhorns looked to regroup against the winless Jayhawks. Instead, Texas lost its final two conference matchups at home to Oklahoma and Baylor and got the No. 3 seed and a match with No. 6 Kansas Wednesday night.
ABOUT TEXAS (3-5, 2-3): Heard (66-of-111 for 839 yards, three TDs, three INTs) leads the Longhorns in rushing (502 yards, three TDs), but former starterTyrone Swoopes (207 rushing yards, five TDs) will continue to be used in short-yardage situations.
The Big 12 officiating crew took about five minutes to review the Kansas muffed punt that Texas recovered in the second quarter.
Texas played a few of their better football of the year, especially on key goal line downs, but too many critical Kansas errors put this game out of reach.
The Jayhawks were already at a disadvantage to start the game as head coach David Beatty suspended wide receivers Tre’ Parmalee and Steven Sims Jr. for a violation of team rules. And that doesn’t even count his fifth score, a fumble pickup and run for 10 yards into the end zone. Kansas predictably went for it on fourth down, but Texas sophomore safety Jason Hall made a huge play by standing up the running back on the perimeter. Quarterback Ryan Willis appeared to score on a 2-yard run, but replays showed he stepped out at the 1.
“We have got to be able to convert that field goal right there”.
Will Texas win this one big or can Kansas find a way to keep things close? Swoopes replaced Heard at quarterback to start the fourth quarter and his first pass attempt was a 40-yard touchdown to Armanti Foreman. Considering that Heard rebounded in the passing game and numerous young players flashed with more playing time, like Elliott, the game ultimately accomplished most of the necesssary objectives with just enough coaching points for the staff to deal out a few criticism in the film room. He added a 44-yard TD run, then scooped a fumble for another late touchdown.
