49ers QB Blaine Gabbert: ‘It’s fun to play ball again’
With The 49ers benching their flamboyant starting quarterback, for the lesser-known backup Blaine Gabbert this weekend versus the Atlanta Falcons, Kaep could be in his last days in the red and gold.
– San Francisco 49ers Coach Jim Tomsula spoke publicly for the first time Wednesday about his decision to bench quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
It is not so much that fans were calling for Gabbert as they were calling for someone other than Kaepernick.
Media reports and rumors swirled that Kaepernick’s teammates were voicing their displeasure with his performance.
Tomsula said he met with his quarterbacks on Monday and opted to play Blaine Gabbert.
“Obviouslyhe wants to keep working through”, Tomsula said.
The 49ers have been simply awful against opposing running backs in 2015, and we should expect the Falcons to take full advantage. As far as Kaepernick’s respite, it has worked for 49ers quarterbacks before. 49ers lead, 45-29-1. The 49ers have dominated the all-time series in games in the San Francisco Bay Area, winning 27 of 38.
As you can imagine, the Falcons weren’t pleased to learn that the 49ers held off on starting Gabbert because they wanted him to make his debut against a “Weak Falcons defense”.
Cornerback Chris Davis was signed to the practice squad to take the place of Ramsey.
A source confirmed to CSNBayArea.com’s Matt Maiocco that Colin Kaepernick has been told that Blaine Gabbert will start for the 49ers against the Falcons on Sunday.
Kaepernick’s passer rating went down each season, from 98.3 in 2012 to 91.6 in 2013 to 86.4 last season to 78.8 in eight games this season. Colin Kaepernick has been benched after throwing or 1,615 yards and six touchdowns this season. Colin Kaepernick completed 20 of 41 passes for 162 yards, and added 28 yards on the ground.
Gabbert, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2011 draft, never became the franchise quarterback former Jaguars general manager Gene Smith envisioned when he traded two picks to get him. In his in his second season with San Francisco, he attempted just seven passes, completing three, in 2014. Center Daniel Kilgore said he will likely start practicing after the bye week. He is, he said, just as focused and locked in.
“However, this is not a long term plan”. The same Mike Mularkey who only showed real emotion in a game one time, which is ever immortalized in this awesome gif.
But with the San Francisco 49ers seemingly out of playoff contention, the team may already be looking to the future and taking a chance to kick the tires on Gabbert, a former first-round bust who struggled during his stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It will be a sad day when one of the league’s entertainers hangs up his jersey, but hopefully that time hasn’t come yet.
The Colts announced Tuesday that Rob Chudzinski will take over Hamilton’s duties.
