Iran, Europe resolve to boost ties after n
“We had constructive talks today on the regional issues, including terrorism and the existing crises”, Larijani said.
Schulz is expected to hold talks with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani on Saturday during his one-day visit to Tehran.
As regards bilateral ties, he said the European Parliament is interested in the expansion of parliamentary cooperation with Iran through the adoption of new approaches.
The announcement came shortly after US President Barack Obama ordered the White House to also take steps towards lifting sanctions on Iran.
The European Union and U.S. sanctions have proved very damaging, locking up billions in Iranian assets overseas and starving the oil-dependent economy of crucially needed technology and investment.
The Islamic Republic of Iran will ban the entry of US consumer goods such as popular brands like Cola-Cola, Nike and Apple as the country prepares for economic sanctions to be lifted.
On October 18, Iran and the world powers announced to start implementing the deal reached in Vienna, Austria, on July 14 over Tehran’s controversial nuclear programme.
“As a result of terrorism in Syria we are facing an influx of refugees in Europe. Right now our main and common goal is fighting Daesh”, the “Islamic State” (IS) group, he said.
The European Parliament president, meantime, reiterated that Iran’s participation in the upcoming Vienna talks on Syria will be crucial. The Syrian regime and the opposition were not represented.
In response to a question on the prospects of Iran’s plan to support the position of Bashar al-Assad, Larijani stated, “the issue of Syria is not limited to one individual, rather a plan needs to be created to create a region free of all terrorist activities; therefore, reducing the region’s problems to one individual person would mark a strategic mistake”.
