Vikings QB Bridgewater leaves game

After the game, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was none too pleased about the hit, and brought up the Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams’ history of encouraging his players to knock out opponents.

Sunday’s game will pit two of the NFL’s best running backs, Gurley and the Vikings’ Adrian Peterson against each other.

Hill, making his first regular-season appearance since late last December when he was with the Rams, hit on two of six passes for 15 yards, including a 6-yard completion to tight end Rhett Ellison on the winning drive in overtime.

With the Vikings offense stalling a bit in the second quarter, kicker Greg Zuerlein and the Rams put three consecutive field goals through the uprights, including an incredible 61-yard attempt.

Vikings guard Brandon Fusco’s response to that: “Yeah, he’s full of crap”. “As long as we have more points than the opponent at the end, that’s all we care about”.

However, coupled with Green Bay’s 37-29 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Minnesota moved into a first-place tie atop the NFC North with the Packers with matching 6-2 records at the halfway point of the regular season. Then on the next possession, Bridgewater scrambled and slid before taking a shoulder to the head from Lamarcus Joyner that was flagged.

Zimmer said the play was dirty. “If we were out on the street, we probably would have had a fight”, and there is no coach in the world we’d want on our side more in that fight. While I certainly don’t think there was a “bounty” placed on Bridgewater, Joyner’s hit was definitely dirty and he can expect a fine from the league.

“It’s a part of the game”. I did not know he was gonna slide. “If you can get over yourself, which a lot of us have done, you just go out there and keep grinding and find a way to win”.

Will there be fallout for hit on Bridgewater?

“I hope Teddy Bridgewater is OK”, Fisher said.

Joyner is actually a lifelong friend of Bridgewater’s. If I could take it back, personally, I will take it back. But Zuerlein said after the game that when he went through pregame warmups, he had tried many field goals going into the wind to try to get a gauge on where he’d be comfortable from kicking that direction. “Was it intentional? Not at all”.

After missing a 48-yard field goal wide right, Zuerlein responded with a game-tying 53-yard attempt to send the game to overtime. Bridgewater completed 13 of 21 passes for 144 yards with an interception and a rushing touchdown before the injury. That was not penalized. Williams, then the Saints’ defensive coordinator, was suspended for a year after the National Football League alleged that he had orchestrated a system in which New Orleans players got bonuses for injuring opponents.

“I felt like we were going to need as many scoring opportunities as we possibly could”, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. “I had to run way back and catch it”, Sherels said.
