Khamenei warns Iranians not to rely on the US
“The nature of the USA attitude is continuation of the same hostile aims from the past, and the nation will not forget this”, the AP reported Khamenei said.
On November 4, 1979, militant students stormed the U.S. Embassy and took 52 Americans hostage after the US declined to hand over the ousted U.S.-backed shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, for trial in Iran.
The supreme leader, Khamenei, may now be offering calculated nods in each direction. Iranian’s also chanted “death to America”.
Protesters held placards with slogans including “Down with USA” and “Down with Israel”.
But what we heard today is again a reflection of how Iran sees America as an enemy and how the long history of enmity between Iran and the United States and the history of American hostility towards Iran have affected the Iranian mentality and we surely are far from seeing Iran and the United States to work together in the global arena and in the region as two close countries.
Earlier this month, United States media reports said Washington had approved exports of soft drinks to Iran, putting an end to a ban which had been in place since 1990s.
Despite a thaw in relations during the nuclear talks, Iran’s hardliners are wary of embracing any Western-style restaurants, which they say is “behavior contrary to Islamic-Iranian culture and traditions”. Khamenei and hard-liners in the Iranian government remain deeply suspicious of the US and view its policies a threat to the country.
The hostages were held for more than 400 days and the crisis prompted the U.S.to sever ties with Iran.
While moderate President Rouhani is keen to normalize relations with the West after the deal, supporters of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei used this year’s rallies across the country to argue the historic agreement would not lead to any rapprochement between Tehran and Washington. Under the terms of the deal, Iran will stop its nuclear weapons program in return for such measures as removing sanctions and trade integration into the world community. A fifth American went missing in 2007, and the Iranian government is believed to have knowledge of his whereabouts.
A few critics have expressed anger at multiple pictures depicting young Iranian children, with one activist group, United Against Nuclear Iran, describing it as a “disgusting exploitation of children”.
Almost 35 years ago, Iranian terrorists took over the American embassy in Iran’s capital city.
“The truth is that the US’s objectives regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran have not changed at all”, he said, according to Iranian agencies.
