Back in business: Axed Liverpool coach gets recruited by Jurgen Klopp’s mate
Town chairman Dean Hoyle admitted last week when announcing Wagner as Chris Powell’s replacement that the 44-year-old former Borussia Dortmund reserve-team coach was a surprise choice.
Wagner, who worked alongside Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, recently departed as boss of the club’s Under-23 side and was instantly linked with reuniting with the 48-year-old at Liverpool.
Klopp and Wagner had a close working relationship at Dortmund, as detailed by Vice magazine previously: “It’s not uncommon for Klopp to join Wagner at his training sessions, and vice versa, and the two are constantly exchanging ideas”.
Wagner, who was Klopp’s best man, is reportedly keen to jet over to England, but whether that will be as a coach to a Klopp, or a manager in his own right remains to be seen.
However, Wagner obviously feels like he wants to take a step in a different direction and carve a managerial career of his own, which is to be respected.
“Their game was very good and this is what I like to do”. I prefer passion in the game. This includes the club’s second team, which Wagner managed from 2011 until he left his role earlier this month. I like speed. I like my teams to score goals. “It depends on the players you have but in the end it is possible to create this style”. “Today is the day to speak about Huddersfield and our vision, idea and plan”, Wagner said.
After a 1-0 home defeat by TuS Erndtebruck at the weekend, a result which leaves Dortmund’s Under 23s in the relegation zone again, Wagner confirmed he was the leaving the club. He will be head coach; he is the club’s first from outside the United Kingdom and Ireland and he brings a new approach and new ideas. He leaves the club a legacy with the players he has developed and improved whilst with us.
