First look at WSU Cougars vs. No. 18 UCLA
UCLA’s defense saw the Buffaloes run a school-record 114 plays and keep possession for more than 41 minutes but could get a break against an Oregon State offense that ranks 116th out of 128 teams in scoring offense.
Beavers running back Storm Barrs-Woods said Oregon State had no excuses on offense. Not all penalties were incurred by the offensive line and each flag set the Bruins back considerably. Mitchell threw for 204 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday’s 27-12 loss to Utah as Oregon State lost for the 12th time in its last 14 conference games.
The Beavers need better players, but they also need their coach to stay on course, which Andersen vows to do. Washington State Cougars recorded 407.4 passing yards and 90.8 rushing yards while allowed 205.4 passing yards and 206.6 russhing yards with turnover differential of 0.0. Quarterback Josh Rosen and the Bruins look to remain ranked with a win today. UCLA has now won two straight. “I think their belief in what they can do is continually getting better. But it’s week-in and week-out, because as we see in this league, that Grim Reaper of a whole bunch of points is right around the corner for a lot of teams if you’re not careful”, Andersen said. After a great Beavers punt pinned the Bruins on their own four-yard line, UCLA marched 96 yards in eight plays to score a touchdown and take a 17-0 lead with 2:46 left in the second quarter. Then after six games, Nick Mitchell moved from No. 3 to ahead of both of the others because he was the better threat as a passer. Ka’imi Fairbairn was again consistent, nailing 38-and-29-yard field goals and all five extra-point attempts. A few plays later, the Bruins capped a 96-yard drive with another touchdown pass to Duarte. “That was a big turning point and very, very disappointing”.
UCLA’s Nate Starks, left, celebrates with teammates after scoring a touchdown in the second half of an NCAA football game, in Corvallis, Ore., on Saturday, November 7, 2015.
-CB Ishmael Adams returned an interception 96 yards for a score last week against Colorado, his third career return for a touchdown.
Freshman Seth Collins began the year under center for the Beavers, but is out with a hyperextended knee suffered in practice.
The bad: The penaltiesThis is one issue the Bruins just can’t get past.
And all of this while not playing in the fourth quarter. A return to Rice-Eccles for a Halloween blackout game against a Beaver squad bristling with former Utah coaches seemed to be just what they needed to gain motivation and get back on track.
