Tony Romo returns to practice, does a few light throwing
This is the news Dallas Cowboys’ fans have been waiting for. The latest loss was a 13-12 setback to the Seattle Seahawks. The Redskins and the Eagles are only a game ahead of Dallas, which has a 2-1 division record.
Neither Brandon Weeden nor Matt Cassel have been able to win a game for Cowboys since the injury. Sure, you could argue that taking a QB in the second round of the draft doesn’t make a lot of sense, considering Dallas already has Romo, but remember the rumors that owner Jerry Jones was obsessing over Johnny Manziel? “Obviously this is quite a different visit I’m having here with you than I thought I would be after seven ballgames”.
Despite reports that the quarterback would be returning to practice sooner than expected, Getlin reports that Romo likely needs to the full eight weeks to recover before he can begin playing again. That doesn’t sound like the plan of a preseason Super Bowl contender.
Tony Romo isn’t ready to return to action yet.
So it is possible, if Cassel can muster up a little something, for the Cowboys to go 3-0 before Romo comes back against the Carolina Panthers.
He left the team’s facility early last week for what coach Jason Garrett said was an excused absence.
“It’s not that we haven’t literally had a similar situation more than one time before and certainly no one has pushed up his expectations any higher than Tony about what he can do for us….” The eagles can not afford to lose a third game in NFC East play and remain behind the New York Giants. “That’s unacceptable. We have done better than that before without Tony so this is disappointing”. But we don’t live in that world.
That game can be seen on KRBC AT 7:30 p.m. on Sunday night. With All-Star cornerback Richard Sherman dogging Dez most of the game, Cassel threw to Dez six times, but only two were caught, and the three times Cassel went downfield to Dez, he was well-covered by Sherman.
The Cowboy offense appears to be regressing under Cassel the same way it regressed under Weeden.
Fitzpatrick has thrown a touchdown pass in every game this season until being injured against Oakland on the team’s first drive Sunday.
Cassel had just 97 yards passing, while the Cowboys had 220 total yards, their fewest since 193 at New Orleans on November 10, 2013. That means Bryant, Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley were merely bystanders in this matchup. That leaves the door open for the Cowboys to still make a run. The run defense ranks 19th and the pass defense ranks 17th.
-PASS DEFENSE: C. Russell Wilson passed for just 210 yards and had an interception. The Cowboys should be very much in that game because Winston is still a rookie quarterback and the defense is still suspect. “Was he a little too conservative?”
-SPECIAL TEAMS: A. Dan Bailey kicked four field goals, including a 52-yarder. Chris Jones averaged 47 yards on four punts, and David Irving blocked a field goal.
A quick conversation with Jason Garrett will have you asking if the Cowboys are truly five straight losses into this season, because his attitude simply doesn’t radiate that reality.
