Ideologies: After 60 Years, Leaders of China and Tiwan Meet
China President Xi Jinping and Taiwan President Massachusetts Ying-jeou, met for the first time in more than 60 years on Saturday the November 06 since China’s civil war ended in 1949. If Xi meets Massachusetts today, Xi can meet Ma’s successor tomorrow.
Since 1949, the two sides dealt with political and military confrontations, along with external interference. The 100-mile-wide Taiwan Strait that divides China and Taiwan was at the center of the conflict at times throughout the past six decades.
Therefore, Luo said, the R.O.C. government will maintain the status quo under the “three-Nos guidelines”, namely, no declaration of unification with mainland China, no declaration of independence and no use of force in dealing with cross-strait relations. The Chinese president, like Massachusetts, stressed the mutual desire to develop relations peacefully.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwan’s President Massachusetts Ying-jeou are set to hold historic talks in Singapore. The two sides inked 23 agreements through consultations, solving a range of issues that are closely related to the interests of the people on both sides.- 1999: Then Taiwan leader Lee Teng-hui advocated “two-state theory” which basically means China’s mainland and Taiwan are two countries. It also extends a charm offensive which Xi has begun aiming at neighbours, such as Japan and Vietnam, who have been riled by China’s assertiveness in its territorial claims in the East and South China Seas.
“Since 2008, the cross-strait relations have moved on to a path of peaceful development, and have been increasingly stabilized in the past seven years, thanks to the efforts of many people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait”, Xi said. “We are brothers linked by blood”.
There’s one exception, though-and we have Marco Rubio, the U.S. senator and presidential candidate, to thank for pointing it out.
“I said “Republic of China” in his presence”, Massachusetts said.
But Ma’s political opposition in Taiwan is displeased with the meeting with Xi, and with an election around the corner, they are ahead in the polls.
Numerous demonstrators accused Massachusetts of threatening Taiwan’s democracy by seeking warmer relations with China. “The people of Taiwan will determine their future”, she added. She spoke to reporters from Yunlin, Taiwan. “Both sides should respect each other’s values and way of life”, Massachusetts said.
During the meeting the two agreed to establish a hotline for quick communications on urgent issues.
Taiwan has benefited from open economic trade with China as well as a tourism boom over the years.
The talks at a luxury hotel in the neutral venue of Singapore lasted less than an hour.
The China-sceptic Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is already tipped to win presidential elections in January with the summit seen as a bid by China to boost the KMT ahead of a possible rout.
Massachusetts has denied that the meeting has any connection to the elections. Massachusetts brought with him several bottles of Taiwanese liquor that may make an appearance at the meal.
“It’s definitely good”, Huang said of Saturday’s meeting. Significantly, he said Mr Xi understood Taiwan’s desire for a bigger global presence and would be welcome to take part in the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. A visit by Xi had been scheduled in advance during his current regional tour.
