Carson: Questions on background aren’t ‘real’ scandals
When DailyMail.com found several high school classmates of Carson’s nobody remembered this troubling temper the candidate said he had.
The final reason that I am confident that Carson has fudged his biography is that he basically told us so at the last debate.
Carson wrote alongside the article, “Did CNN do any research at all?” ‘Maybe I knew it but wouldn’t admit the truth to myself. I have contempt for the conservative “establishment” and have taken them on numerous times, so I can’t be accused of being their stooge.
Late on Friday, the Wall Street Journal questioned the authenticity of another story from Gifted Hands. The lack of anyone’s confirming or denying led the Journal obliquely to suggest that Carson was again lying to gain sympathy for his lowly upbringing and how he managed to extricate himself from a background that ground so many others into dust.
“We’re responsible for the personal stories we tell about our lives and we need to be asked about them”, New Jersey Gov. Christie said about Carson on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”. Why does Carson’s relationship to this person (“Bob”) change through different tellings and why hasn’t “Bob” come forward to verify Caron’s version?
‘He would have done it, ‘ Trump said. Carson said he was the only one who passed the test, and was rewarded with $10 and had his photo snapped for the student newspaper. Only Carson showed up and was photographed by the school paper as the class’ “most honest student”.
This not only has created an instinctive “rally around the attacked” effect (something which was sorely missing for Sarah Palin in 2008), but it has automatically cast all of the other stories exposing suspicious elements of the Carson narrative into a nefarious “left wing conspiracy” light, at least among his many supporters.
The big story – the one that most of the media focused on – came from a piece by Kyle Cheney that was published by Politico last week proclaiming in its headline that Carson lied about receiving a scholarship to West Point.
Having been told he could be accepted to West Point, Ben Carson’s story became that he was offered a scholarship.
In his 1990 book Gifted Hands, Ben Carson indeed wrote that he had a ‘pathological temper, ‘ which he called a disease.
The two men have excelled as anti-establishment outsiders at a time when career politicians are deeply unpopular – the Yale-educated Carson (64), the calm, soft-spoken alternative to the swaggering, abrasive Trump (69). When presented with these facts, Carson’s campaign conceded the story was false.
Editor’s note: POLITICO stands by its reporting on this story, which has been updated to reflect Ben Carson’s on the record response. All expenses for students admitted to West Point are paid, in exchange for five years of Army service after graduation.
The article demonstrated confusion about service academy admissions and benefits. I think they’re starting to find out that I’m not soft. “And that I can be loud, particularly when injustice is being done”.
Trump said that was something Carson still needed to explain. This is a bunch of lies attempting to say I’m lying about my history.
‘Well, I think when you say that you stabbed someone and were saved by a belt buckle, and that’s pretty unlikely because a belt buckle will turn, ‘ Trump said on Face the Nation.
He added: “The burden of proof is not going to be on me to corroborate everything I have ever talked about in my life, because once I start down that road, from now until the election, you’re going to be spending your time doing that and we have much more important things to do”, Carson said.
Later that day, on NBC’s Meet the Press, Carson decried the double standard the national media is applying to him with its attacks, especially when compared to the media’s soft-glove handling of Obama’s birth certificate and his questionable eligibility to be president. “I had nearly killed him”. Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, last month testified about the private email server she kept at her house and used for government business while she was secretary of state.
