Mike Tomlin Becomes 3rd Steelers Head Coach To Win 50 Home Games
Those special teams failures set up a Bengals field goal that cut the deficit to one point.
Panicked fantasy-league owners took to the streets with pitchforks and torches when Le’Veon Bell went on injured reserve.
“I’m encouraged because he’s an established, capable guy, a guy we know can deliver”, Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said about Williams. “How we can put together the right mix to be successful”. But, before halftime, Antonio Brown caught 10 passes for 180 yards.
“All I can say is ‘wow, ‘” Raiders safety Charles Woodson said of Brown’s performance.
Derek Carr passed for 301 yards and threw four touchdown passes for the second straight week, the first Raiders quarterback to do so in 41 years. Carr threw one interception in the Steelers end zone in the fourth quarter that snuffed out a drive, and a fumble by Taiwan Jones on a kickoff return gave Pittsburgh the ball at the Raiders’ 6, setting up a Steelers touchdown.
Earlier this season, Williams started Pittsburgh’s first two games while Bell served a two-game suspension. “It’s disheartening to a degree, but we know we can play much better”.
“If you win the turnover battle, you win the game”, said Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio after Sunday’s defeat. “If we can run the table and do a few things I think we’ve got a shot”. “We had a great opportunity”. He caught it well, too; his 55 yards on two receptions were second on the team only to Brown. Big Ben went down late in the game with what is being called a left foot injury, as it looked like he got stepped on by Aldon Smith. They held off the very game Raiders after blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead to snap a two-game losing streak with a 38-35 win, capped off by Chris Boswell’s 18-yard field goal with two seconds left. When Roethlisberger was out with an MCL strain, the team went 2-2 with Michael Vick and Jones as the quarterback. Running back Latavius Murray gained 96 yards on 17 carries, though he was also knocked out with a stunning hit from Steelers safety Mike Mitchell. Walker had by far his best game of the season, catching seven passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns.
The Steelers will also play the Browns again to end their year and the second game against the Baltimore Ravens, games that Roethlisberger should be back for. He’ll reportedly miss “a few weeks” with a mid-foot sprain. The Browns should be well rested after playing the Thursday game this week and with Johnny Manziel playing well in a 31-10 loss to Cincinnati it would seem the mercurial QB might be ready for a breakout game in Pittsburgh … so look for the Browns to go back Josh McCown instead.
The Steelers will stay in Pittsburgh next week as they play host to the 2-7 Cleveland Browns. All the All-Pro wide receiver did was set franchise marks for receptions (17) and yards receiving (284) while adding 22 yards rushing. The Steelers repeatedly allowed big chunks of yards down the middle of the field.
-Patriots RB Dion Lewis left in the third quarter with a knee injury.
-S Will Allen (ankle) returned to the starting lineup after missing three games. He made an immediate impact with seven tackles and three defensed passes.
The Steelers believe they will get similar work from Landry Jones at quarterback against the Browns and, if necessary, beyond.
-TE Jesse James was active for the first time in his rookie season as TE Matt Speath (knee) was inactive.
Carr is the third Raider with four touchdown passes in back-to-back games and the first since the 1970 merger (Cotton Davidson in 1964 and Tom Flores in 1963).
The fifth-round pick out of Florida State took a carry around the left side of the Bills line for 11 yards, reaching the ball over the goal line before dropping it out of bounds.
-WR/KR Jacoby Jones was active after being claimed off waivers from San Diego on Thursday and not participating in any practices. Two plays later, Mitchell slammed into Murray, forcing a fumble that Jarvis Jones recovered at the 25. In the three games he has started this season, Williams has 374 yards on 68 carries, an average of 5.5 yards per carry.
