Dion Lewis officially out for year with torn ACL
Albany native and New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis left Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins after tearing his ACL in the third quarter.
According to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, Lewis will be out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL.
Belichick was typically tight-lipped, having little to say about Lewis’s injury after the game, noting that “the game is just over”. The Patriots were so impressed with what Lewis brought to the team in the early parts of the season that he was signed to a two-year extension in early October. Through seven games, Lewis had already set single-season career highs in rushing yards (234), receiving yards (388), carries (49), receptions (36) and total touchdowns (four).
The New England Patriots came out of the win fairly banged up.
The Patriots running back suffered the non-contact knee injury Sunday.
The Patriots also have James White and Brandon Bolden, both of whom can be used as passing-down backs, behind Lewis on the depth chart. He was on the field for a while being attended to by the team’s medical personnel.
Team officials announced the move on Monday, hours after coach Bill Belichick said Lewis’ chances to play didn’t look so good as he was finishing up a few tests.
The New England Patriots and their fans will have to hold their breath for at least a little longer.
