Man killed after auto hits trolley
A MAN HAS died in Australia after the shopping trolley he was riding in with a friend crashed into a auto.
The trolley collided with a auto at a speed of up to 80km/h near the intersection of Coogee Bay Road and Judge Street.
Police believe the two men were “mucking around” before the crash and the driver was not to blame.
The two 28-year-old mates stumbled across a shopping trolley and began riding down the long and steep Coogee Bay Road in Randwick early on Tuesday morning where they were hit by a vehicle, police said.
One of the men died at the scene and the second man was taken to nearby Princes of Wales Hospital with critical injuries.
A man was killed early today after skylarking in a shopping trolley.
Supt Dengate praised the actions of the driver and a passing cyclist who stopped to offer assistance before emergency crews arrived.
He is undergoing mandatory blood and drug testing, but produced a negative blood-alcohol reading immediately after the incident.
The man who survived had just arrived in Australia – he remains in hospital and police said he could face charges.
“We’re conducting inquiries into a number of areas but that’s certainly one theory, but certainly not the only theory that we’re looking at”, Detective Superintendent Dengate said.
Officers have not yet spoken to the injured man, but police are leaving the door open to pressing charges against him.
One Randwick resident, who stopped to inspect the scene, said: “It could have happened to anyone”.
“We’ve all done stupid stuff when we’re young and there’s shopping trolleys ditched along this road all the time”, he said.
