Disney abandons plans to reboot Aladdin using Robin Williams out-takes
Although it will have a strong focus on the Genie character, it is also believed the movie – which already has Tripp Vinson on board to produce through his Vinson Films banner – will re-tell the classic “Aladdin” story, which was brought to life in the 1992 animated film. Read about the future of the Robin Williams Genie character after the jump.
News of Genie’s fate was revealed by a former (unnamed) Disney producer to The Sunday Times.
In a recent revelation it was confirmed from the will of late Robin Williams that Disney will not be able to use his Genie voice for their Aladdin sequel-prequel.
And what’s the point of even trying to make another movie without the comedy legend’s many voices?
We all know that Disney loves a good sequel and we’re sure that the prospect of penning new adventures for Aladdin and the inhabitants of Agrabah is on their radar given that it is such a fan favourite.
Outtakes from the film do, however, feature in the recently released Blu-ray of Aladdin.
Williams’ other famous roles also can’t be tampered with. “Now, because he insisted on a final say on such material, [the jokes] will remain in the vaults”. However, Disney went back on that promise, and Williams publicly voiced his displeasure.
Williams” returned for the third, direct-to-video, instalment “Aladdin and the King of Thieves’ in 1996. His career has definitively ended, and his posthumous films Boulevard, A Merry Friggin’ Christmas, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and Absolutely Anything have all come and gone from theaters. The Hollywood Reporter points out that voice acting done by Williams after his death could leave his widow and children with estate penalties.
