Baker Mayfield leads No. 14 Oklahoma past Iowa State, 52-16

The Sooners take on No. 6 Baylor next week before facing TCU and Oklahoma State to close out the regular season. ISU has not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Alexander Robinson in 2009.

Iowa State will celebrate its final home game of the season Saturday with senior day. ISU’s only win against OU since 1961 was a 33-31 victory in 1990 in Norman. The Sooners are 43-1-1 in the last 45 meetings against the Cyclones. They are giving up just under 30 points a game, and more than 430 yards.

Outside of the second quarter, the Sooners didn’t have much problem moving the ball. Lanning has five touchdown passes in his last two games. Overall, he has completed 69.7 percent of his passes. Senior Quenton Bundrage has a team-high four TD catches. The Sooners outgained the Cyclones on the ground, 510 yards to 87.

Oklahoma pulled off a reverse flea flicker that resulted in a 75-yard touchdown pass to fullback Dimitri Flowers. Blake Bell headlined a Sooner receiving corps that lost leader Sterling Shepard to injury on OU’s first play from scrimmage.

Playing at home always provides an extra boost for Oklahoma, so they seem to have everything going in their favor this week. It could all go away in another 60 minutes against Iowa State prompting the doubts about the Cowboys to rise right back to the forefront.

OU scored three straight TDs in the first quarter on its way to a 52-16 blowout win. D’Vario Montgomery led the Cyclones with 88 receiving yards and a TD. OU did not punt at all in the Kansas game. That’s the same Texas team that had entered its matchup with the Sooners on October 10 in disarray but came out of the Cotton Bowl with a 24-17 upset.

Mayfield continues to thrive, as his performance against Kansas demonstrated. The following play was a 27 yard strike to Dede Westbrook that went for six points. Can the Sooners start quickly on defense and play with an edge against an opponent they should easily beat? To get our goal at the end, we’ve got to do it one game at a time.

Over the season’s first three games, OU was -4 in turnover margin. But last year and now this year, he’s been really good player to have. He has 8.0 more than second-place Rocky Calmus (1998-01).

Iowa State’s struggles have overshadowed the emergence of sophomore wide receiver Allen Lazard, one of the biggest recruits the Cyclones have ever landed. Giving the upperclassmen a successful sendoff should motivate the entire team, said Rhoads.

Since losing to Texas on October 10, the Sooners have outscored their last four opponents 232-50. The team has scored 51 points with him leading the offense in the last six-plus quarters. He’s now second in the Big 12 with 0.81 sacks per game. Texas owns the second best winning percentage (.723; 99-38) record during the same span and TCU has the third best (.594; 19-13). LSU is the only other school that can make that claim.
