Collins, Mets Reach New Two-Year Deal
“I’m thrilled to death to be here”, Collins told reporters after the World Series. Hitting coach Kevin Long is on a tmulti-year contract that included 2016, but pitching coach Dan Warthen’s two-year deal expired after this season.
If Collins completes his deal, he will surpass Davey Johnson’s franchise record of 1,012 regular-season games managed. And Wheeler – who isn’t expected back from Tommy John rehab until July – already has been traded once by the Mets, in the collapsed Carlos Gomez swap that more famously included a crying Flores.
Three days after their rousing season ended with a stinging loss to Kansas City, the Mets rewarded Collins on Wednesday for piloting them to the National League pennant. I said, ‘You got it. You’ve earned this. “We had said going in if Matt gave us seven, Jeurys was going to pitch two”.
“Their best chance to enhance the lineup in a big way might be to consider parting with one of their big young starters, and that’s hard to see them doing that”. After a few water and a chair to sit upon were provided, Alderson said, “OK, where were we?” with a laugh. Terry Collins showed that Sunday night despite the skeptics saying that Matt Harvey was running the team. The late Yankees manager Billy Martin may have done it differently but you can’t compare the temperament of Collins to Martin. They love him. He’s learned to be a player’s manager while serving with NY. Collins was persuaded by emotion, costing the Mets the game.
Alderson described 21-year-old Dilson Herrera as a “viable alternative from within the organization” to succeed Murphy at second base.
More importantly, the Mets will have to back it up. In the Harvey game Familia came in with the tying run on second and nobody out.
So sitting here today, as I think about the future, I am thinking about next year, I want to worry about that. “That’s the same goal we’re going to have this year”. But the Mets face huge expectations after what they accomplished, and that in itself makes their job much tougher as they prepare for 2016. Collins was under plenty of fire before the team went on a huge run down the stretch, with many people clamoring for a new man to lead the way.
The 66-year-old has created a winning culture in the clubhouse and seems like the epitome of a player’s manager.
Originally hired as the team’s Minor League Field Coordinator, Collins was named the 20 manager of the NY Mets on November 23, 2010.
