Dead 14 Injured in Horrific Crash With Church Van
A Prince George’s County public schools spokeswoman says two of the children injured in a fiery crash involving a pickup truck and a church van are county elementary school students.
A child was among the dead Sunday and authorities said the injuries ranged from serious to critical in the Maryland community of Hyattsville just northeast of Washington, D.C.
The road in Hyattsville where Sunday’s collision took place has a double-yellow line and no dividing barriers. “It went up in flames, just went up in flames”, Keiona Washington told WUSA9.
Emergency personnel work at the scene following a fatal crash Sunday, November 8, 2015, in Hyattsville, Md. White smoke billowed from the scene afterward. “It was a horrific accident and we want to make sure that all the families are notified before we release their names”. The 11 injuries range from non-life threatening to life-threatening according to PGFD Chief Spokesman Mark Brady. While the incident is still being investigated by detectives, there are eight adults that are now in the hospital and four are in critical condition.
Santos says through a Spanish language translator that he rushed to the hospital after getting word of the crash and he spent most of Sunday night and all of Monday visiting with the injured members of his congregation.
Police said the pickup truck had been involved in a hit-and-run crash with a vehicle on Chillum Road.
Police have not yet identified the driver of the pickup truck that crashed into the van along Chillum Road. A pickup truck and a large passenger van that collided came to rest in front of a two-story brick house with three cars parked in front.
A witness also told WTTG-TV that she heard the crash from her home, and when she ran out, she saw “just regular people running in and pulling people out of the van”.
