EACS students celebrate Veterans Day early with special celebration
World War II veteran and author Richard Thomsen will present “Learning to Fly the Boeing B-29 Superfortress”. A community-wide ceremony will follow at 9 a.m.in the gymnasium.
Hoping one day to join the U.S. Army or Navy himself, the Leon High School senior is leading a coalition of high school students to support Honor Flight Tallahassee, an organization founded in 2012 that brings North Florida and South Georgia veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials that honor their services. Veterans are also invited to stay for coffee and conversation immediately following the ceremony.
An audience of parents, veterans and active military personnel giggled at the kindergarteners’ answers. There will be representation from the different branches of the military, El Paso’s police and fire departments and the U.S. Border Patrol.
Sgt. Roberto Ituarte Elementary, 12860 Tierra Sonora, will begin its Veterans Day remembrance at 7:30 a.m. November 10 with cookies and coffee in library. If 400+ pints are sold, a bonus $250 will be donated!
In Mahoning County, Austintown Fitch High School is hosting a Veterans Day assembly in the auditorium at 9 a.m. Army Veteran, Kenneth David, and Gold Star military mother, Chris Wortman, are honorary speakers. The students will recite the national anthem, read a series of poems and sing America the attractive.
Following the event at the school will be a gathering on the Delta County Courthouse steps to place a wreath on the memorial as well as a prayer. All proceeds will benefit local veterans. Call (406) 837-4528 for more information.
About 75 members of the school community watched as the ROTC members proudly performed their honor guard duties.
It’s all part of the school’s day of appreciation. Bruce Adams will be presented the Kerel Hagen Award, named after and in memory of the longtime government teacher and coach.
Younger students also learned the significance of Veterans Day through contests and thematic lessons in various classes.
At Southern Bluffs Elementary, their Veterans Day event includes raising of the flag and 4th and 5th grade musical performances. Free, but donations will be accepted for the USO club at Camp Atterbury. More details will be announced at the ceremony.
St. Francis of Assisi will hold a Veterans Day celebration at its Elementary School Campus Waldo Worship Site, 1121 N. 14th St., at 2:15 p.m., Wednesday, November 11.
