Apple CEO Tim Cook: ‘Why would you buy a PC anymore?’
The iPad Pro, which goes on sale Wednesday, is the largest and most powerful device in Apple’s iPad lineup. “No really, why would you buy one?” In addition, the iPad Pro includes 10-hour battery life, Apple’s first-time-ever four-speaker audio system and a weight of 1.57 pounds.
Tim Cook also talked about the imminent launch of Apple’s jumbo-sized iPad Pro in the interview, and spoke of its competition: “I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? “.
Apple announced yesterday that the iPad Pro would be available for order tomorrow, November 11, and would be arriving for purchase in-store later in the week.
When the CEO said the iPad Pro is such a complete package that he was traveling only with it and his iPhone, talk turned to the other Apple devices poised to be pushed to the wayside in the shift.
A report last month by market tracker IDC showed a 12.6 percent year-over-year decline in tablet sales in the July-September quarter. “I think if you have the larger phone, you’re less likely to have the iPad mini”, he said, referring to the iPhone 6s Plus vs. iPad mini choice.
That’s a little different to what we’d heard previously, with Apple talking about integrating its wearable with a range of medical sensors. While the hope is that the Pro will turn around sales of the struggling tablet line, it also might provide a few competition to Apple’s Mac. It also has productivity-minded accessories, like a keyboard case and the Apple Pencil, a new pressure-sensitive stylus for artists and other creatives.
We’ll be testing the iPad Pro, out later this week, and see how it compares with Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4.
Apple also said it redesigned the touch subsystem of the iPad Pro’s Multi-Touch display specifically for the Apple Pencil to “dramatically reduce latency and deliver incredible accuracy for activities like fine art illustration and detailed 3D design”.
Steve Jobs famously said, “If you see a stylus… they blew it” – so it’s a bit of a surprise that Apple is bringing out a massive new iPad, with a stylus.
