Report says grilled, barbecued meat can increase the risk of kidney cancer
Cooking meats at high temperatures, as in barbecuing or pan-frying, may increase the risk for kidney cancer, a new study suggests. World Health Organization has already connected all red meat to bowel cancer and the list of reasons not to eat red meat just keeps getting longer, it seems.
So what’s the problem with BBQ and pan-fried meat?
Medical Daily also explains, researchers at the University of Texas studied patients diet as well as DNA. Epidemiologic studies based on people’s responses to diet questionnaires have further established a correlation between high consumption of well done, fried, or grilled meats and a higher risk for cancers of the colon, pancreas and prostate, according to the National Cancer Institute. That is, only a link between the consumption of meat and risk of kidney cancer were found by researchers in the study, not that meat consumption is the cause for cancer. They also ate more meat cooked at high temperatures or over an open flame – such as pan-fried, grilled or barbecued. MeIQx is one of the heterocyclic amines formed by high temperature cooking.
Processed meats can increase the chances for colon cancer by 18 percent by eating 50 grams of it per day per week. It knocks it out of the ball park. These patients were recently diagnosed with cancer of kidney.
Picture this: it’s Sunday morning and the smell of bacon and sausage wafts from the kitchen and beckons you to come downstairs to enjoy the succulent, crispy meat alongside sunny side up eggs, two buttered pieces of toast and a big cup of coffee. No, surprisingly it didn’t.
These new findings support the dietary recommendations for cancer prevention from the American Cancer Society, namely to limit the intake of red and processed meats, she said. Experts assure meat-lovers that there is no need to cut meat out entirely, but it is important to maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle and eat everything in moderation. They should also take more caution into how they prepare it as well. Cooking meat in this way can create carcinogens. Study authors suggested to cook meat till done, but not charred.
The argument between meat eaters and non-meat eaters may be on the rise due to the new evidence, but people are entitled to eat what they want. So it’s unlikely the kidney cancer study will reduce the BBQs, tailgate parties and steak frys, either.
