Lufthansa cancels 930 flights Wednesday due to strike by flight attendants
Flights by German airline Lufthansa to and from Bulgaria’s Sofia Airport on November 11 were cancelled because of continuing industrial action by Independent Flight Attendant’s Organization (UFO).
The airline said it was canceling the flights at the three hubs for Wednesday, affecting 100,000 customers, due to the uncertainty of whether they’d be able to operate the connections.
The cancellations will affect 100,000 travellers going to or from Frankfurt, Munich and Duesseldorf. The union rejected the airline’s newest supply Monday., saying it constituted exclusively a “minimal” enchancment.Lufthansa hasn’t yet given any figures for costs caused by the cabin-crew work halts.
Lufthansa canceled over 1,000 flights, about one third of its schedule, on Monday as cabin crew expanded their strike.
He called for immediate talks and warned that the union could still decide to extend strikes beyond Friday.
A union representing German flight attendants has called on its members to walk out on all Lufthansa flights from Wednesday.
The head of UFO, Nicoley Baublies, hit back, telling reporters that the union would now strike on all short-, medium- and long-haul flights from Wednesday until Friday.
The airline had been seeking the injunctions at the two German labor courts to prevent more walkouts after stoppages for four of the past five days, offering to resolve the dispute through arbitration.
Court spokeswoman Anke Salchow said the decision only applied today in Duesseldorf, but that Lufthansa could seek another injunction today.
According to Lufthansa, it already offers its flight attendants pay and benefits above industry averages.
The ruling by a Dusseldorf court only covers crew at that site, with the second suit being heard by a court in Darmstadt Tuesday evening.
