ULFA leader Anup Chetia handed over to India by Bangladesh
A founder-member of ULFA, he was arrested on December 21, 1997, from a house in Mohammedpur area of Bangladesh for illegally entering the country on a forged passport and possessing illegal foreign currency, firearms and a satellite phone.
However, Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Wednesday he had no information that Chetia was being handed over to India as claimed by Rijiju.
The significant development comes days after the deportation to India of Chhota Rajan, one of country’s most-wanted criminals who was on the run for 27 years.
When asked if the investigation would be done by the Central agency, Rijiju said that the case would be investigated by both the central agency and Assam Police.
While India has been seeking Chetia’s handover since 1997, the Bangladesh government had refused to do so in the absence of an extradition treaty with India.
Arabinda Rajkhowa was arrested near Dhaka in 2009 and repatriated to India, but was later released on bail from the Guwahati Central Jail on January 1, 2011.
Although Chetia completed his prison term of seven years, he was kept in a prison as his request for asylum was pending with the Bangladesh government.
Anup Chetia real name Golap Baruah, He is also known as Sunil Baruah, Bhaijan or Ahmed. he is the General Secretary of the banned (ULFA)United Liberation Front of Asom in Assam.
