World War I Museum offers free admission in honor of Veteran’s Day

But now the day is meant to remember those who have served in the military at any time, not just during World War I.
On May 13, 1938, the US government made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday.
As a result, hundreds of businesses across the country offer discounts to veterans and active-duty military personnel on Veterans Day.

But for the past five years, at least, the group has acted big – pressing its members to ring bells on November 11 to mark Armistice Day, the precursor to Veterans Day, to reclaim the day for what they say it was originally intended: marking an end to war and a call for peace. I am reminded of the names of veterans and conflicts in which they served, etched in stone monuments and stone walls and bricks throughout the country. I was honored to take part in a prayer service led by a Kentucky soldier, a chaplain from Lexington, who was one of the first on the scene at the deadly crash.
Every day dozens of men and women serving in the Middle East return to the U.S. Today there are 3.8 million veterans who have a service-related disability. But it should not have to be a holiday to say “thank you for your service”. “And they knocked on the door, and I went to the door and I told them, ‘I know exactly why you’re here'”. Check with your local VA to see what you can do personally to lower the rate of unemployment, homelessness and veteran suicide.
