Terror returns to Jerusalem, Israeli wounded
Qalqilya is located in Area A of the West Bank, ostensibly under full security control of the Palestinian Authority.
Shortly afterwards, a 37-year-old Palestinian was shot dead after trying to stab two guards outside the Damascus Gate entrance to Jerusalem’s walled Old City, according to police.
Israeli police say two Palestinian boys aged 12 and 13 stabbed a security guard in east Jerusalem.
It is not known who released the video, accessible only to those involved in the investigation and to lawyers.
Another attack was foiled later in the afternoon when an attempted stabbing of a Border Police officer in East Jerusalem at a checkpoint near Abu Dis was prevented.
Elsewhere in Jerusalem, 13-year-old Ahmed Manasra went on trial for his part in a stabbing incident that became a political lightning rod.
The young assailants’ attack happened minutes before a second stabbing in another section of the Israeli city, continuing a recent uptick in violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
The other, also from east Jerusalem, was arrested. Numerous Palestinians killed were alleged attackers. The other Palestinians died in clashes between stone-throwers and security forces.
While knife and car-ramming assaults have continued in the occupied West Bank during a weeks-long surge of violence, Tuesday’s attacks were the first in Jerusalem in more than a week. More than 2,000 Palestinians have also been injured in clashes with Israeli forces, forcing the Red Crescent to declare an emergency.
Israel has blamed the violence on incitement by Palestinian leaders. Palestinians say the unrest is the inevitable result of almost 50 years of Israeli occupation and no hope for gaining independence.
That guard used his weapon to shoot and, thus, “neutralized the terrorist”, the police said via Twitter.
Police spokesperson Luba Samri denied the allegations, saying the questioning was carried out “in a professional manner”.
