Rex Ryan confirms IK Enemkpali to be captain vs. Jets

If that’s the case, Ryan certainly had a curious way of showing it Monday.

A few of Rex Ryan’s pride is at stake when he returns to MetLife Stadium this Thursday night, and it has more to do with just him trying to prove he is a better coach than the one who led the NY Jets to three consecutive losing seasons before being fired last December.

Ryan said he was simply continuing his tradition of choosing players with a connection to the opposing team or the game’s location.

Naming captains based exclusively on the opponent at hand is not unfamiliar territory for Ryan. But these are serious times in the National Football League with regards to off-the-field behavior, from a string of domestic-violence incidents so bad they forced Roger Goodell to change the personal conduct policy to incidents like the bullying scandal that rocked the locker room of the Miami Dolphins.

Enemkpali is not one of the Bills’ top players and head coach Rex Ryan is clearly doing it to dig Smith and the Jets.

“I don’t think anything [about it]”, Smith said. “But that’s not what we do”.

For the Jets, Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the difference maker. “Because right now I haven’t thought about it. What I’m telling you is the truth”.

Ryan was the coach for the Jets in recent years before being let go after years of struggled in NY.

“I’m kind of weighing different options right now”, Fitzpatrick said.

The likely possibilities are either Friday, because the Jets would then have nine days before their next game, or after the season. The quarterback wants to be sure he doesn’t miss any games.

Meanwhile, the Jets are dealing with several other injuries, including to kicker Nick Folk.

This is also Ryan’s defense against Todd Bowles’ defense.
