The Legion is here to assist Veterans find the benefits they have earned by their service.
The goal is to attract a new generation of veterans that served in Iraq and Afghanistan, like Army veteran Sara Avitia.
It was a shock for veterans on this Veterans Day when a pickup truck slammed into their American Legion post. Michael Pohl, who is retired from the U.S. Coast Guard, also spoke and thanked military families who support veterans and allow them to serve successfully. It is a chance to get together with his fellow former service members and remember the time spent serving their country.
Local veterans’ organizations are partnering with the City of Fontana to present “A Tribute to our Veterans” on Wednesday, November 11. Florida, home to the third-largest veteran population after California and Texas, should look to be a model for how to serve a population that has served this country over its history.
While it’s good to see the usual faces at the ceremonies, Catterton said, he especially likes to see young people getting involved.
For Meyers resident Kenny Curtzwiler, being a member of the military is a source of pride. The North Oakland VFW Post 334, of which he is commander, has sold and distributed more poppies that any other post in the nation.
“That’s really impressive”, he said.
While other Legion Posts have struggled with membership and finances, Dewey Lowman has continued to flourish, she said.
“We have a very active Legion”, said Post 65 member Larry Hovde.

America is built on representative government and capitalism, two institutions that recognize how fickle human beings can be.

“We’ll have another deadline for next Memorial Day”, Everist said about completing phase II. Some of the latest estimates show that about 28 million veterans are still alive in the United States, but fewer than 1 million World War II vets out of 16 million who served remain, followed by 3 million from the Korean War and another 7 million from Vietnam.
“If you need something done or need information or need to talk to somebody about something, go to the VFW post, because there’s going to be somebody sitting in there that can help you”, Watson said.
