New Kickstarter campaign could revive Mystery Science Theater 3000
Mystery Science Theater 3000 originally premiered as a public access show in 1988.
Our show has had a long, unusual run.
The end goal is to demonstrate to TV or online programming execs that the show is still profitable and that fans are still interested. Sadly, it was just as Prince predicted.
“Everything that happened in the old MST3K definitely happened”, Hodgson said in his AMA. In the time it’s taken me to write this news up, the goal’s funding has jumped almost $100,000 and it’s showing no signs of slowing down, so it’s probably safe to say we can expect to see more MST3K in the near future.
Nearly 30 years ago, a hilarious TV show called “Mystery Science Theater 3000” (MST3K) debuted on Minneapolis’ KTMA.
“‘Mystery Science Theater 3000′ is a true cult-classic comedy series that continues to attract fans till this day”, said Shout!
For those who did not watch the original series, the show follows a mad scientist, who kidnaps an unsuspecting man and launches him into space to perform devious experiments on his mind, testing the limits of human sanity. The riff genre might be saturated, but no one does it quite like MST3K so we hope they make a comeback. You might be wondering why were getting more MST3K episodes now and not at any point in the past 16 years after its cancellation. Hodgson told Entertainment Weekly that he wants a new host and new voices for Crow and Tom Servo, seeing as the hosts and voices were changed up over the years in the original series. If youre ready to spend tens of dollars on all kinds of new Mystery Science Theater 3000 stuff, from feature-length episodes to show swag, then youll be jazzed to know that Hodgson has started up a Kickstarter campaign to produce new installments of the show. “To keep the show fresh, I really believe it’s important to keep bringing in new talent and keep looking forward”. Each additional $1.1 million after that will allow them to shoot another three episodes, up to 12 episodes. And if you’re a movie or odd television buff there’s a decent chance MST3K rings a clear bell in your brain.
Multiplatform media company Shout Factory has acquired the rights to the comedy created by Joel Hodgson, who has launched a Kickstarter campaign to revive the series for a new generation.
