‘Can we call the election for tomorrow?’
“The (U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service) claimed as many as 1.3 million, though the number officially apprehended did not come anywhere near this total”, according to the Texas State Historical Association’s online handbook, produced in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin.
Later in the program, Jim Flanagan, a senior administrator at St. Anselm College, raised the issue again.
Trump wants to scale up this program more than 10-fold to deport 11 million Latinos.
As to the “giant sucking sound”, as Ross Perot used to say, this time coming from abandoned rental apartment, a big jump in the vacancy rate would lead to lower rents for us citizens, but the deflationary pressures this would pose for the economy would also keep the Federal Reserve from any serious effort to normalize interest rates, which ironically might now be needed to prevent a deflationary spiral toward recession.
“I’ve actually become friends with a lot of the people that are up there”, Trump added, but did not name which opponents he counts as friends. But will it succeed in diminishing the undocumented population over time?
“Dwight Eisenhower. You don’t get nicer, you don’t get friendlier; they moved a million and a half people out”.
“Eisenhower did it”, he said, in reference to a 1954 deportation program.
Regarding Trump’s strategy for illegal immigration, Cohen said, “But like everything in this country that’s broken, Mr. Trump is going to need to fix it. How he’s going to fix it, I don’t think anybody has the answer to that right now”.
For new presidential debaters like Trump and Carson, audiences fill in the specifics left unspoken, and in a sense assist these new debaters.
As an example that it could be done, Trump brought up a program instituted by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 9, 1954. We started off with 17 and one by one they are disappearing, it’s a lovely thing to watch as they go out.
But his plan to allow about four million people to apply for work permits has been hindered by legal challenges. As a result, the number of removals in 1955 was barely three percent of the previous year’s numbers.
“I would not let the people who put their money in there all go down”, he said.
Eisenhower did oversee a 1950s campaign that deported undocumented immigrants.
Speaking briefly with reporters as he exited the ballroom, Trump said he would deport illegal immigrants “humanely”. Many returned illegally or legally as guest workers. In other words, the straight-talker is being just as cagey as the rest of them.
After Trump was asked about deportation forces Wednesday morning, he successfully managed to turn the conversation back to his favorite part about explaining his immigration policy: describing just how lovely his border wall will be. “We have no choice”. But that is emphatically not what a trade imbalance is.
“Unlike today, Mexicans caught in the roundup were not simply released at the border, where they could easily reenter the US”.
Now, this is apparently a standard business practice with Trump as his vendors will tell you. Odds are, the Mexican government will retaliate on behalf of its businesses and withhold payment to American businesses, unleashing a full-blown balance-of-payment war.
Donald Trump is just fine with eight candidates on the debate stage, and he wouldn’t mind if a few more disappear before the next one.
