A Meaningful Exchange Actually Happened Between Marco Rubio And Rand Paul At
“That has a lot to do with the types of industries that are prevalent in both (high tech and entertainment in California, finance in New York)”, Cobb said.
Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul spoke to students and supporters during a “Students for Rand Rally” at the Kirby Student Center on the UMD campus on Monday afternoon. They do pay. It is refundable, not just against the taxes they pay to the government, but also the – on their federal income tax, it’s refundable against the payroll tax. He is certainly correct that we have ceded too much power to the executive, and any true conservative can not but applaud his ambition to shrink the size of government. Paul is right about the cities, but not states.
Paul’s remarks appeared to resonate with the crowd that responded with subdued applause but stayed in their chairs for the duration of his 30-minute speech. But it was when Marco Rubio called for more interventionism earlier, Paul wasn’t having it. “I’m not”, Rubio said in defense of military spending.
“We think we do have an appeal that goes across party lines”, he said. He and others argued for implementing a no-fly zone in Syria to create safe havens for noncombatants there.
As you can imagine Paul was pleased with his performance.
He also brought a few level-headedness and gravitas to the discussion about talking to our enemies. I’m not saying it’s a good thing, but you better know at least what we’re getting into.
Paul made the most persuasive case that he could win over voters who aren’t committed conservative Republicans. That received one of the biggest cheers from the audience. And it was Paul who schooled Donald Trump on the little fact that China is not a partner in the Trans Pacific Partnership. That was uttered by Donald Trump which was a huge surprise despite his call on stronger military presence. The other nine either have a Democratic mayor, a nonpartisan one, or no mayor at all because they’re an unincorporated area. It’s the number one abuser of this country. Sombody’s got to provide it, so you’ve got to take it from somebody. It’s not even discussed in the nearly 6,000-page agreement….
Paul countered: “We might want to point out China’s not part of this deal”. But I’m not naive enough to say, well, Iraq has them flying over their airspace, we’re just going to announce that we’re shooting them down?
Rand Paul is now trying to reassemble that group behind his own candidacy.
A Twitter follower asked us to research Paul’s claim, which the Kentucky senator made during the November 10 debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This must have been sweet, sweet revenge for the senator.
PAUL: “How is it conservative to add a trillion dollars in military expenditures?” We have to be conservative with all spending, domestic spending and welfare spending.
What is a fiscal conservative?
For those who think this means cutting our military a la Barack Obama, who is making our military weaker, think again.
Rubio: “We have to defend this nation”.
Paul contended that policy is unrealistic without implementing a 70 or 80 percent business tax or printing more money, driving up prices in the economy.
This increase in nondefense missions has been caused by a shift from “war-fighting to nation-building”.
Rubio insisted we build up our military because we have radical enemies around the world. These are the issues Paul is addressing, not supporting isolationism.
