Younis Khan To Retire From ODI Career After ENG-PAK Match Today
Dropped from the one-day team against Australia previous year, Younis smashed a total of 468 in the 2-0 Test win against Australia that forced selectors to recall him to the one-day team.
They went fro 147 for 3 to 180 for 8 and from there Pakistan never let go off their grip on England. He anchored the innings to finish 102 not out, taking particular liking to spinners Rashid and Moeen Ali, whose combined figures were 16-0-92-1 from the 43.4 overs.
Proceedings got off to a woeful start for England, who lost opener Jason Roy to just the second delivery of the day when he was clean bowled by the towering figure of Mohammad Irfan for a duck and Joe Root lasted less than an over before he was trapped lbw by Anwar Ali.
“As a batsman I played a positive role in the team’s wins in one-day cricket and now I realise that it’s time to keep myself away from limited overs cricket”. The left-hander had suffered concussion after a bouncer by pacer Mitchell Starc struck his helmet during ODI series against Australia in September.
Morgan was in a purple patch of form before he was so rudely interrupted by Starc and now he made his ninth half-century in one-day worldwide cricket in 2015, more than any other England captain in a calendar year.
With him was Taylor who again showed his busy effectiveness and skill against spin that earned him a place in the final Test at Sharjah.
They first had to overcame a miserable start, stumbling to 14 for three after choosing to bat – and then following a stand of 133 between Eoin Morgan (76) and James Taylor (60) contrived to lose another four wickets for 14.
Former Test Cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz said if Younus wanted to retire from ODI cricket after playing just one game then it was useless to put him in the squad adding that it would have been better to give chance to a deserving player.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also confirmed Younis’ decision to retire.
Moeen hit Yasir Shah to midwicket where Azam took a stunning one-handed catch, and Irfan returned to snare Adil Rashid.
Younis Khan scored 9 in his last ODI match against England. Chasing 217, Pakistan reached the target in 44th over with six wickets in hand as Hafeez and Babar Azam notched an unbeaten partnership of 106 runs for the fifth wicket. Topley managed to get another to straighten against Bilal Asif and though the umpire wasn’t interested, a review proved successful.
“Younus has been doing well and that is why the selectors felt he should be played again in the one-day matches”.
