Rex Ryan’s Jets tenure was filled with memorable moments
In Ryan’s first season with the Bills, Buffalo is 4-4 on the season and in third place in the AFC East. Injuries have hurt the Bills so far this season, as their starting quarterback, running back, and No. 1 wide receiver have all missed time.
The ball was scooped up by Duke Williams, who brought it to the end zone – meaning the Bills scored nine points in just nine seconds. Eric Decker led the Jets in receptions, with six for 85 yards and one touchdown. On defense, Buffalo will look to dismantle the passing game. Surprisingly, Ryan Fitzpatrick has exceeded expectations this season at quarterback.
A Buffalo win puts both teams at 5-4, but NY can distance itself from both the Bills and Dolphins while remaining the second-best team in the division. The problem is the Jets weren’t able to help Fitzpatrick out on Thursday and it led to a tough loss against a divisional rival. But the Bills have been giving up a few eye-popping numbers, including allowing 390 or more yards three times this season – after only doing that twice under Jim Schwartz last season.
Prior to the losing streak, the Jets won back-to-back games and are looking to go on their third back-to-back winning streak as the second half of the season continues to roll on. The Bills beat the Dolphins 33-17.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Jets made an terrible mistake. Ryan Fitzpatrick has been the team’s MVP, serving as a surprisingly efficient facilitator for the offense despite his physical limitations and a jacked up left thumb that could require surgery as soon as Friday. We soon found out that Indy and Miami were nowhere near as good as they were hyped to be in the off-season, and the Bills have yet to win consecutive games. Above all this is a game that could give the Bills a serious boost in the wild card race. So as the pre-game clock ticked down from 90 minutes to 60, to 30 to 20 and to 15, Rex Ryan waited. The Jets certainly don’t want to see Rex leave with a win, and they’ll be motivated to stop it.
“It’s not a slap in anybody’s face”, Ryan said. Ironically both teams have had quarterback issues and only one game separates them in the AFC standings.
“And they can’t have you back”.
The Jets come into the week 10 matchup versus the Buffalo Bills pretty banged up. That will be no easy task, though, as the Jets statistically have the best rushing defense in the league, led by what may be the best front seven in the league behind defensive linemen Muhammad Wilkerson, Leonard Williams, and Sheldon Richardson and inside linebacker David Harris. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find a unit on this squad that hasn’t had to deal with a major injury. You move on, and every now and then, they call you back. I firmly believe the Jets are the better team but they just may not be this week. The Jets defense has been constructed to handle such talented players, but they’ve underachieved of late. That will fire up the home team NY Jets something fierce.
For the Bills this comes down to one thing: Rex’s revenge. The offensive line will also be important to get the running game going as Chris Ivory has struggled to gain yards recently after he got off to a hot start.
“We had an opportunity at the end to win the game, we didn’t capitalize”.
