Target criticized for selling OCD/Obsessive Christmas Disorder sweater
Target said it has no plans to pull a Christmas-themed sweater that a few people think trivializes a mental illness.
Target’s “OCD” sweater, a play on obsessive-compulsive disorder, is part of the retailer’s so-called Ugly Christmas Sweater collection, which pokes fun at the Christmas tradition, according to the Chicago Tribune. It is worth noting that Target didn’t invent the slogan, you can find it online on everything from coffee mugs to pilliow cases.
A few customers are demanding Target stop selling the sweater.
“We never want to disappoint our guests and we apologize for any discomfort”.
The red sweater has “OCD” written in large green letters with the words “obsessive Christmas disorder” written underneath. In spite of all the outrage surrounding a holiday sweater, the retailer announced that it has no plans to remove it from stores.
OCD is no joke to the afflicted. The disorder causes “severe anxiety” and “involves both obsessions and compulsions that take a lot of time and get in the way of important activities the person values”, according to the global OCD Foundation.
And Kate G added: “Hey @Target this sweater isn’t cute or amusing”. “I have OCD & am fine w/this – it’s amusing!”
