National Hockey League ROUNDUP: Rangers win seventh straight, beating Blues, 6-3
Despite giving up three goals tonight, Henrik Lundqvist was solid once again, and turned this game in the Rangers favor with a ridiculous diving stick save during the first period. 6, New York Rangers, Miller 3 (Stepan, Girardi), 10:21. Miller’s goal midway through the second period was the eventual game-winner.
Jason Zucker scored his second goal of the game with 1:10 remaining in overtime as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 at PNC Arena. Nearing the end of the period, Dmitrij Jaskin finally got the Blues on the board and made this a 3-1 game heading into the second period.
St. Louis Blues left wing Alexander Steen (20) shoots through his legs toward NY Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist (30), of Sweden, in the first period of an NHL hockey game in NY, Thursday, November 12, 2015.
NOTES: NY scratched Dylan McIlrath and Dominic Moore….
Zuccarello embarrassed St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester for a highlight-reel first-period goal and added two assists in the Blueshirts’ 6-3 win at the Garden.
Even if they win their last two games, the Red Raiders (5-5, 2-5 Big 12) won’t have a winning Big 12 record for a sixth straight season.
Zdeno Chara and Ryan Spooner scored in the first to give Boston a 2-0 lead, but Carl Soderberg and Francois Beauchemin scored to tie it 2-2 later in the period. The Rangers’ third goal on just five shots sent Allen to the bench and summoned Elliott.
Despite the early deficit, Blues coach Ken Hitchcock was pleased with his team’s play. When Lundqvist couldn’t hold onto Colton Parayko’s blast, Dmitri Jaskin put in the loose puck at 16:40.
It perhaps seemed innocent at the time, but the Blues made things interesting in the second. He unleashed a wrist shot that climbed upstairs and beat Lundqvist on the far side, and as the puck rattled around in the net, Lundqvist swiveled his head as if he hadn’t seen it.
A trio of late goals saw the Dallas Stars post a 6-3 thrashing of the Winnipeg Jets as Jamie Benn, Antoine Roussel and Vernon Fiddler all scored in the final six minutes. But each time the club pulled to within one goal, NY stretched its lead to two.
The Blues then got a few help, as Brassard was called for tripping.
Both teams need the win to become bowl eligible: Kansas State (3-5, 0-5) requires wins in three of its final four games, while Texas Tech has to win one of its final two.
The power play had converted four of its last seven chances at that point, but with another opportunity that overlapped into the third period, the unit couldn’t find the equalizer.
T.J. Oshie also scored for Washington while Scott Laughton and Claude Giroux scored the Flyers goals. When you’re up against a team like that, I mean, we were up 3-0 and we knew they’d keep coming.
Not long after, they get another power play opportunity but didn’t have the same luck.
