Chalk Talk: How Creativity Helped the Cowboys Beat TCU
The extremely high-scoring games featuring porous defenses that the Big 12 teams manufacture each week are reminiscent of high school football, and, when compared to the well-rounded top-tier teams that the Big Ten and SEC boast, it has made Baylor and TCU less desirable. Four of TCU’s last six Big 12 road games have been decided by seven points or less.
The College Football Playoff was supposed to be the infallible solution to the woes of the BCS era, supplanting computer rankings with human voters. Oklahoma State’s nonconference schedule this season was Central MI, Central Arkansas and UTSA. But the point remains that Ames is not a location to take lightly, as the then No. 2 Cowboys found out after their national title dreams were crushed. The Tar Heels are the ultimate overlooked team, not even ranked by the playoff committee.
The Horned Frogs have given up just two sacks in five conference games, but 12th-ranked Oklahoma State (8-0, 5-0, No. 14 CFP) ranks second in the Big 12 with four sacks per game in league play.
But after Oklahoma State dominated TCU, 49-29, on Saturday, we finally know what we need to know about this team: it’s really, really good.
After beating the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday the Oklahoma State Cowboys should be more than an afterthought when it comes to winning the Big 12.
For the Big 12: Not great. But these polls should be an indicator that Baylor might be bracing for a tumble from its current No. 6 positioning in the polls and OSU might jump significantly from its No. 14 placement last week. I think it’s safe to say that 2015 doesn’t exactly fit that distinction at all. Both receivers on the left side are on the line of scrimmage, leaving the inside receiver ineligible. Quarterback Mason Rudolph is having a breakout season at this point, but he has not been tested by a defense that is as powerful as TCU.
The parallels between this year’s version of Notre Dame and last year’s Ohio State are eerie. The total has gone OVER in four of Oklahoma State’s last six games. They’ve got a few things that they can get accomplished and we certainly have got a few things that we can get accomplished that could help both of our programs monumentally. The senior’s performance was the biggest highlight on an afternoon full of them for the Tar Heels (8-1, 5-0 ACC), who haven’t lost since the opener and firmed up their hold on the Coastal Division race by blowing out the Blue Devils (6-3, 3-2).
Starting the Nebraska 9, Armstrong hit Jordan Westerkamp for passes of 28 and 33 yards.
Discrepancies on the final stat sheet favored the Frogs in total yards (663-456), rushing yards (218-81), offensive plays (110-53) and first downs (36-16).
While the Cyclones have just three wins this season, all three have come on their turf and that advantage has at least kept them competitive against heavyweights like Iowa this season. Oklahoma State had to go and ruin the party. The offense, which ranks 16th in S&P+, has been outstanding, and the passing game ranks eighth nationally with 9.4 yards per attempt. However, West Virginia scored 10 points to open the second quarter to pull within a touchdown. After MI State (8-1, 4-1 Big Ten, No. 7 CFP) went three-and-out, he led the winning drive.
TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin is stopped short of a touchdown by Oklahoma State defender Chad Whitener, rear, in the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game in Stillwater, Okla., Saturday, November 7, 2015. “We are going to fight and we are going to find a way to win”. Teams like Kansas, Iowa State and-if you can believe it-Texas hurt the conference’s reputation in the committee’s eyes. Warren led the conference with almost 25 carries per game and 160 yards per game in October. Moreover, the Pac-12 is eating its own young this season, which could take a little luster off a championship run.
Doctson is the nation’s leading receiver with 1,315 yards on 78 catches.
