Apple boss says Microsoft ‘tries too hard’ with Surface Book

Unsurprisingly, he rated the iPad Pro as a great tool for creative professionals. But is it really?

The iPad Pro charges the keyboard and powers it, so there’s no need for chargers or Bluetooth pairing. But you will have to purchase it separately. In fact, the device’s keyboard and stylus are less required than the Surface’s keyboard covers. That’s a tolerable amount if you don’t plan on keeping a lot of videos or images stored on the device, but it’s at the low end of tolerable – especially since many people (to Apple’s likely financial chagrin) tend to keep tablets for years. Ultra-fast wireless connectivity keeps you connected wherever you go with 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO technology, support for a wide range of LTE bands and other fast cellular network technologies (DCHSDPA, HSPA+). It makes you want to use it, even if you’re just surfing the web, checking email, tracking storms on radar or skimming through photos. Its storage capacities, even with Cloud services helping out, would not be enough to hold out an entire library of music or movies.

While Microsoft has already introduced the Surface Book as the ideal replacement for the MacBook, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said during a speech at an Irish college that Redmond’s device is a mix of too many things and it tries to do too much. The iPad Pro starts at $799 for US customers, with a keyboard option for an additional $169.

That said, it will not weigh you down when you insert it in your backpack. It is as thin as your iPhone 6 Plus. On the big screen the maps app feels like unfolding old-school map. But not every app is optimized for it. There are a few that keep on crashing after downloading it. Although it is good, it is not ideal.

The Smart Connector is almost impossible to replace without destroying something.

Cook’s criticism also seems to suggest that 2-in-1 tablet/laptop combos aren’t worthwhile, but they have proved to be one of the more competitive product lines in mobile computing over the past couple of years.
