New Jersey Devils at Chicago Blackhawks Preview
“I think if you look at a few of the other lines, they easily could have had goals”, Kane said after the game.
New Jersey slogged its way through most of the game, focusing on limiting Hawks chances more than creating their own. Like his teammate, Mike Cammalleri also scored versus the Blackhawks and has been very comfortable away from the Garden State – recording nine points (two goals, seven assists) in six games.
Things haven’t exactly gone well for the Chicago Blackhawks this season which included losing all world defenseman Duncan Keith for 10 games with a knee injury, but I don’t think fans expected the offense to be this bad.
Palmieri gave the Devils a 2-1 lead when he punched in a rebound with 2:59 to go in the second period. Henrique and Palmieri’s goals weren’t exactly eye-poppers, either. That period wasn’t exactly the best one for goaltender Corey Crawford.
The Hawks would keep pushing in the third period and eventually tie the game off an impressive shot on a tough angle by Artemi Panarin. Schneider also stopped rookie left winger Marko Dano late in the first period by using his stick to deflect a shot off the crossbar.
Kalinin scored on a rebound that put New Jersey ahead with 2:27 remaining in the third period.
Sergey Kalinin scored a power-play goal with 2:27 left and the New Jersey Devils beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 Thursday night for their second victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions in a week. A late rally by Chicago after pulling Crawford for the 6-on-5 advantage didn’t yield anything as the buzzer sounded in defeat.
The Blackhawks drop to 8-7-1 this season with the loss. The cushion proved necessary after Edler scored with 23.9 seconds left. It was what they gave up that frustrated Quenneville.
The Blackhawks were close to getting a point, and every one of them helps with as inconsistent as they’ve been in this early season. The center only has four points in 15 games, but with three in his last three, he could be starting to find his game in his first season in North America. Even including the 34-of-36 effort against the Oilers last Sunday, Crawford still has a save percentage of just 86 percent over the past four games. Scott Darling hasn’t been great this season, either, and at a certain point, we’re going to have to admit the goaltending isn’t living up to expectations right now. Kane blasted a one-timer from the left of the crease, but Schneider reacted fast and extended his right-leg pad to make the save. The lottery line isn’t winning anything or scoring anything and it needs to pick it up if the Blackhawks expect to start winning games on a regular basis. The rest of the forwards are more or less leaving that group to shoulder a load that’s practically impossible to live up to.
