MI Tech Student Arrested For Yik Yak Threats Against Black Students
Online threats also were made on Thursday against Howard University in Washington.
Ithaca College officials said they have contacted representatives from the messaging app Yik Yak to try to identify who made physical threats against people at the campus. The suspect was arrested late Thursday night and taken to the Houghton jail to await their hearing.
The student is temporarily suspended and banned from campus.
The threat is at least the fourth made against black college students this week, after protests over campus racism at the University of Missouri ousted the university president.
“It’s important to remember that we are a community and will not tolerate threats to any member of our family”, the university’s President Glenn Mroz said in the statement. An investigation is ongoing at the Upper Peninsula university with an enrollment of about 7,000 students.
Yik Yak is a social media app that allows people to anonymously post public comments and photos that can be seen by others. If you have any information regarding this or any other threats, please contact Public Safety and Police Service at 906-487-2216.
He is scheduled to appear for an arraignment hearing at Houghton County District Court on Monday, university spokeswoman Jennifer Donovan said.
Counseling services were offered at the university’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion Thursday evening.
Racial tensions on the Columbia, Missouri, campus have been accelerating since September, when an African-American student was targeted with racial slurs.
“We moved pretty quickly, and were in constant communication with everybody”, the representative said. “These are conversations that might be hard to have, but are necessary for our community”.
