Thousands pay tribute to the fallen on Armistice Day
Armistice Day has been observed with moments of silence and the laying of wreaths in countries around the world.
Calcot Resident, Doreen Everitt-Hughes was also given the opportunity to lay down a wreath, after she lost her husband Jack Everitt, also from Reading, who died aged 23 as a prisoner of war in Germany.
A commemoration at The Centotaph in Whitehall will be attended by veterans and their families, who will pay their respects to those killed in conflict since 1914.
Television coverage on many channels cut to footage of the Big Ben clock tower chiming for 11 a.m. local time [1100GMT], followed by brief scenes of services held in other cities including Belfast and Glasgow.
Ambassador Sylvie Bermann said it was France’s way of “thanking them for their tremendous service”.
Later on Wednesday, 19 British veterans will be presented with France’s highest honour, the Légion d’honneur.
“We make almost five million poppies every year to meet demand and it is clear that the Scottish public cares about our Armed Forces community, past and present”.
“It’s vital that people of all ages understand the importance of remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending the freedoms we enjoy today”.
The pair laid their crosses of remembrance in front of two wooden crosses from the graves of unknown British soldiers from World Wars One and Two.
At RAF Coningsby, commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1, photographer Sgt Andy Benson captured several images using a poppy from the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation at the Tower of London past year. We would never criticise anyone for not wearing a poppy.

British military personnel joined troops from Spain, Portugal and the United States for an Armistice Day ceremony at a training site in Iraq.
People across Milton Keynes and across the entire United Kingdom will fall silent at 11am this morning, November 11, to mark Armistice Day.
