Johnson’s go-ahead TD leads South Alabama past LA-Lafayette

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun football team fell to 4-5 Thursday night after falling on the road to the South Alabama Jaguars by the score of 32-25.

Brooks Haack attempted to hit Gabe Fuselier on a curl route, but South Alabama defender E.J. May read it, picked it off, and set up the Jaguars with a short field.

The Cajuns took the lead on a Savion Brown 85 yard interception return for a touchdown. Special teams were really good again, but overall it was not good enough.

South Alabama is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games at home.

For South Alabama, it was a trick play in which Clements caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from receiver Gerald Everett following a reserve off a Wildcat handoff.

Elijah McGuire, who was held to a season-low 21 yards on the ground, capped a nine-play, 76-yard drive when he scored on a 3-yard carry on the Ragin’ Cajuns opening drive of the second half. Surprisingly, the Jaguars are just 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS at home this season where they are giving up 41.0 points and 433 total yards at 5.8 yards per play.

The glaring deficiency for the Cajuns was the run game.

South Alabama started its next drive at its own 35 and drove to the UL 16 before the Ragin’ Cajuns defense stepped up.

South Alabama very almost gave this one away, but put itself in position to win with third-down efficiency (8 of 17) and solid run defense (ULL had just 43 yards rushing). There will be plenty of opportunities for the Jaguars to pick off Louisiana-Lafayette’s quarterback. Dominique Tovell added nine stops for the Ragin’ Cajuns while Washington had a career-high seven tackles, including a personal-best four stops for loss and sack. Blake Dees leads the Jaguars with 83 tackles, Kalen Jackson has two interceptions and DeMarion Harper has two sacks.

“We’ve got to get back to work”, Hudspeth said. They now trail Sun Belt leader Arkansas State by two games with three to go, and they must win two of those three games to reach the six wins required to be bowl-eligible.
